The BA.2. variant is here. That didn’t take long. Because Switzerland has decided the pandemic is over, that they are Vaxxed and Done (rather than Vaxxed and Cautious), numbers are spiking fast. Our school community has predictably experienced many, many cases, and it seems to be the youngest children driving it. Again, predictable. Thankfully, though I’m told it’s no fun and games, especially for a couple of days, people are bouncing back quickly, and moving on. It’s incredible how far our mindset has come in just two years.

Here was my plea for prudence to our own community:

Dear Parents,

The return from the February holiday brings a big change in Covid protection measures, and while I fully support the lifting of restrictions, I nevertheless feel it’s important we continue to do our part to keep all members of our community safe.

The world has clearly moved from a “vaccinated and cautious” to a “vaccinated and done” mindset. It’s remarkable how unified people are globally in this respect. We need to remember, however, that the so-called herd immunity has not been achieved, that Covid-19 will be among us for our lifetimes, that it is still killing people, and that there remain vulnerable people in our community (immunocompromised, elderly, and others who may not know they are at risk for a bad response to a Covid infection).

My hope is that we adopt a “vaccinated and prudent” mindset. Asians for years have taken this approach as a way to promote public health. If sick (with whatever), and if they must go out, they wear a mask. So as we no longer need to wear a mask to keep viruses out, we can voluntarily wear one to keep our illnesses to ourselves (keeping in mind we shouldn’t come to school in the first place if we are showing symptoms of illness).

May you be safe and well. May we all be safe and well.

These are so much better than the cranial swabs
